Former running back Stephens helped lead the Lumberjacks to the FWC championship and the NAIA Holiday Bowl in 1960. He established a still-standing record of 20 touchdowns scored that season, his selection to the Hall of Fame was “the greatest thing that ever happened to me,” Stephens said. “I was amazed to learn they still remembered me.” his athletic performance during the two years he spent at HSU led to contacts by almost every professional football team in the country. His size (5-7) kept him from going pro, Stephens said, but he did play semi-pro ball for two years with the Humboldt Foresters after leaving HSU.
