Franny Givens entered Humboldt State after an illustrious athletic career at Ferndale High during the early 1930s. He immediately played football for Charley Erb and earned  four letters in this sport before graduation in 1940. Givins was an outstanding forward in basketball with a specialty of a left-handed hook shot and held the scoring record for a single-game participation for several years. In track he competed in the high jump and was one of those most dangerous of all athletes, a southpaw discus thrower.

After graduation from Humboldt, Franny returned to his alma mater as a mathematics teacher, physical educator and athletic coach. He has served in many coaching capacities including long tenure as varsity basketball coach wherein his teams won championships and played in NCAA regional playoffs.
