Schroeder was captain and a guard on th 1948 football team which had a 6-3 record. He was described by the late Joseph Forbes as “one of the finest lineman in the history of Humboldt State football.” Schroeder claimed all-conference honors in each of the three seasons he played at Humboldt. He also competed in track and field as a shot putter and discus thrower, winning third place in the discus in the 1947 FWC championships. At the conclusion of his playing career, Schroeder coached the HSU freshman team with the late Jack Norton. He assisted in coaching football under Phil Sarboe, was head track coach, and started Humboldt States first wrestling team.
