CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Fourth straight 2OT tie for Lumberjack squad

ROHNERT PARK — (Oct. 4) A potential game-winning goal by Humboldt State's Katie Coppoletta with one minute remaining in double overtime was called back due to an offsides call, giving the Lumberjacks a 1-1 against Sonoma State Wednesday in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action.

The Lumberjacks move to 6-4-4 overall and 3-3-4 in CCAA play while the Seawolves move to 8-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in conference matches.

While the Lumberjacks spent most of the first half defending the ball in their own end, they did break through the Seawolves' defense on a few occasions. A long shot from Kim Halloran midway through the period was HSU's first near opportunity, but the shot went just wide, nicking off the side post out of bounds.

With just over one minute remaining the half, the Jacks earned a free kick just over the midfield line. Elissa White sent the ball to the far post where Katie Forba was able to tap the ball back in front of the goalmouth. Halloran charged the ball, beating the SSU defender and struck the ball into the back of the net, giving the Jacks a 1-0 lead at the break.

Sonoma tied the game at 1-1 just six-and-a-half minutes into the second half when Khyra Buchanan headed in a free kick by Megan Catton.

After the Seawolves' equalizer, the Lumberjacks settled back into their game and were able to hold SSU at bay for the remainder of regulation.

Neither team was able to create a credible scoring opportunity in the first ten minutes sudden victory overtime, and when Coppoletta's goal was called back, the game ended in a draw.

Staci Self had another strong performance in goal for the Lumberjacks, collecting eight saves on the Seawolves' 21 shots.

Humboldt returns to Arcata to host San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
