Jessica Hewins curled a corner kick into the back of UC San Diego's net in the 86th minute of play, helping Humboldt State's women's soccer team to a 1-1 comeback tie with the No. 13 nationally ranked Tritons Sunday in La Jolla.
The Lumberjacks, earning their third draw in as many games, are now 6-4-3 overall and 3-3-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The Tritons move to 9-1-2 overall and 6-1-2 in league matches.
“Technically, we struggled a bit,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “(UC San Diego) is a great team and it was a challenge for us to keep up with them, but we improved as the game progressed.
UCSD, which had been averaging nearly 2.5 goals scored per game entering today's match, broke through the Lumberjacks' defense ten minutes into the second half to take a 1-0 lead.
Kathy Sepulveda tallied the goal for the Tritons off a cross by Kelly Cochran.
“After (UCSD) scored we wanted to put more pressure on them so we moved three up top and that was very effective,” said Cumbo. “Jess scored on the corner kick and we held on and worked hard for the rest of regulation and overtime.”
Staci Self came up with eight saves in goal for the Jacks while the Tritons' keeper Jessica McGovern have one save.
Humboldt hits the road to face travel partner Sonoma State on Wednesday before returning home to host San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
