ARCATA — (Oct. 13) Cal Poly Pomona took full advantage of Humboldt State's struggles Friday, scoring one goal in the first half and two in the second to claim a 3-0 California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer win in Arcata.
The Lumberjacks fall to 10-5-2 overall and and 6-5-2 in the CCAA while the Broncos improve to 8-5-3 overall and 5-4-3 in conference play.
“We're disappointed with the result,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “It was a bad day for all of us and not what I expected today. We struggled to combine passes and just couldn't play soccer very well.”
Pomona's Todd Dolfo scored in the 30th minute of play when he stole a ball in the Lumberjacks' backfield and beat keeper
Drew Ryan one-on-one for a 1-0 lead.
In the 66th minute of play Kevin Jim netted a short shot from the right side of the box to give the Broncos a 2-0 lead. Dolfo and Tommy Antunovich were credited with assists on the goal.
Taking advantage of the Lumberjacks' push to score, Dolfo gave the Broncos a 3-0 lead with under two minutes remaining, knocking in the shot off a bad clear by an HSU defender.
Humboldt was out-shot in the match 14-6 with only two shots on goal.
Ryan had seven saves for the Lumberjacks while CPP's keeper Thomas Ryan made a pair of saves.
The Lumberjacks return to the field Sunday for their final home game of the season. Kick off against the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes is scheduled for 3:00 p.m. Humboldt's three seniors will be honored in a ceremony prior to the match.
