ARCATA — ( Oct. 13)
Meghan Connolly knocked in a shot two minutes into play and
Kim Halloran tallied her seventh goal of the season fourteen minutes later, giving Humboldt State women's soccer team a 2-0 win against California Collegiate Athletic Association opponent Cal Poly Pomona Friday.
The Lumberjacks, who are still in the running to make the postseason conference tournament, improve to 9-4-4 overall and 6-3-4 in the CCAA. The Broncos, meanwhile, fall to 7-7-2 overall and 5-6-2 in league matches.
“This was a great result,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We had a good start and really possessed the ball in the first half.”
Jessica Hewins set up the first score for Humboldt, playing a long ball from midfield to
Lindsey Harpham running down the flank. Harpham cut the ball in and sent a shot towards the back of the goal. Her shot bounced off the post back into play when Connolly ran onto it and volleyed it into the open net.
At the 16:52 mark of the game,
Libby Kimmett slipped a short pass forward to a posting Halloran who turned in and sent a left footed, lofting shot just out of the reach of Pomona's goalkeeper Amanda Cunningham.
Tisha Cotta nearly made it a 3-0 lead in the first half, but was called offsides on the shot taken midway through the period.
Humboldt continued to dominate possession of the ball throughout the second half, taking 11 shots in the period, but Broncos' keeper Nakisha Gutierrez came up with seven saves to hold the Jacks at bay.
For Humboldt,
Staci Self had four saves on her way to earning her sixth shutout of the season.
“The second half was exciting as Pomona really pushed to score, but we adjusted the way we played and held them off,” said Cumbo. “I was happy with our 90 minutes.”
The Lumberjacks return to the field Sunday for their final home game of the season. Kick off against the visiting Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Humboldt's eight seniors will be honored in a ceremony prior to the match.
