BAKERSFIELD — (Oct. 14) Humboldt State's volleyball team won games one and four, but was unable to close out the match, falling 30-27, 18-30, 22-30, 30-28, 11-15 to Cal State Bakersfield in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday.
The Lumberjacks drop to 6-12 overall and 3-11 in CCAA play while the Roadrunners improve to 4-10 overall and in conference action.
In the first game, Humboldt ran off five straight points to take an early 6-1 lead and strung together another set of five points midway through the game to hold for a 30-27 win.
While the Jacks had 17 kills and a .244 attack percentage in the first game, the second game was another story as HSU committed 10 errors while putting down just seven kills for a negative attack percentage. The Roadrunners scored six straight points to open the game and never trailed for a 30-18 finish.
Humboldt went down early again in the third game, but battled to within six at 24-18. Bakersfield stepped up up, however, and a kill by Rosemary Stribling ended the game at 30-22.
The Jacks turned things around to start the fourth game, taking an early 6-1 lead. The Roadrunners eventually tied the game twice before taking over the lead at 20-19. Humboldt never let the game get out of reach, battling back for a 30-28 win and forcing a fifth game, but a pair of kills by Stribley and one by Kate McWhorter gave CSUB a 15-11 win in the deciding game.
Katie Norkunas paced the Jacks with 17 kills and 16 digs while
Mallory Briney and
Lynsey Adams added 10 kills each.
Maya Domoto had a team-high 18 digs while Megahn Bernt and Adams had three blocks apiece.
Bakersfield had three players with double figure kills, led by Stribling with 17.
The Lumberjacks will look to get back on track at home next week, hosting Cal State Stanislaus and Chico State on Friday and Saturday, respectively, in the East Gym.
