ARCATA — (Oct. 15)
Jessica Hewins nailed a penalty kick with two seconds remaining in the first sudden victory overtime period, giving Humboldt State's women's soccer team a 1-0 win over CSU San Bernardino Sunday in Arcata.
The Lumberjacks improve to 10-4-4 overall and 7-3-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Coyotes fall to 1-15-1 overall and 0-13-1 in conference matches.
“I was happy with the way we played and possessed the ball,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We had trouble in the final third and struggled to get shots off, but we kept pressure on their backs and knew that sooner or later it would come.”
Humboldt had the ball in the Coyotes' box a number of times in the 90-minutes of regulation, but could not get a solid shot on goal.
In the overtime period, the Lumberjacks continued to press forward, then earned the PK when freshman forward
Katie Forba was taken down from behind at the top of the box.
Hewins stepped up and calming slotted the ball into the right corner of the net for the win.
“Jess did a great job finishing that penalty kick under pressure,” said Cumbo. “That's what a senior needs to do.”
The Lumberjacks are now currently tied with Cal State Dominguez Hills for the fourth highest point total in the CCAA. The two division champions and the next top two teams following the conclusion of the regular season will earn a berth in the CCAA Postseason Tournament.
Humboldt closes out regular season play on the road next week, traveling to Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
