CHICO — (Oct. 20) Battling back from an early 1-0 deficit, Humboldt State's women's soccer team scored a pair of unanswered goals, including on in sudden-victory overtime to claim a 2-1 win over Chico State Friday.
The Lumberjacks improve to 11-4-4 overall and 8-3-4 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play. The North Division leading Wildcats, fall for the first time in nine games, moving to 12-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in league matches.
“The first half wasn't our strongest, but we made some changes and executed much better in the second half,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo.
Still vying for a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament, HSU was in a “must win” situation as Cal State Dominguez Hills, which is tied with the Jacks for the fourth in the overall standings, also picked up a win on Friday.
Mackenzie Doty gave Chico State a 1-0 lead at the 35:46 mark when she received a ball from Abby Stretch on a breakaway and sent a hard shot past Lumberjack keeper
Staci Self.
After regrouping at halftime,
Naz Zangana evened the score at 1-1 in the 61st minute of play.
Allison Lawrence got the play started, sending a cross in front of the goal from the far endline.
Kim Halloran's shot off the cross bounced off the post and Zangana touched it back in the net.
Two minutes and 22 seconds into the first overtime period, Halloran recorded her eighth goal of the season when she sent home a ball dropped by the Wildcats' keeper off a shot by HSU's
Libby Kimmett.
“Ali and Kim had tremendous games,” said Cumbo. “I was impressed with the whole team's confidence, especially in the second half.”
Humboldt travels to Cal State Stanislaus Sunday at 12:30 p.m. to close out regular-season play. A win over the Warriors will assure the Jacks, who would win the tiebreak with CS Dominguez Hills, the final playoff berth.
