CHICO — (Oct. 20) Both Humboldt State and Chico State tallied a pair of goals in the first 45 minutes of play, but neither team could find the back of the net in the second half and two overtime periods, ending the match with a 2-2 draw in men's soccer action Friday.
The Lumberjacks move to 11-5-3 overall and 7-5-3 in California Collegiate Athletic Association play while the Wildcats move to 9-8-1 overall and 8-6-1 in conference action.
“We had all the chances we needed (to win). We had some awesome shots,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo.
Chico jumped on the board just 11 minutes into the game as Jason Phillips scored on a deflected first attempt by Nic Munley.
Humboldt responded immediately with a goal by
Matt Colwell at the 14:46 mark.
Lance Pimentel was credited with the assist.
The seesaw continued as the Wildcats snatched the lead back less than a minute later on a goal by Evan Armstrong.
Not to be outdone, HSU's
Kevin Maxwell evened the score at 2-2 with a long shot from the far right side of the goal box on a pass from
Adam Tschannen.
“We were down a goal and came back and tied it,” said Cumbo. “Then we went down again, came back again and held on in the second half and overtime. We took it to (Chico) in overtime and got tons of great shots.”
Humboldt had 16 shots in the game while Chico State tallied 17.
Drew Ryan came up with seven big saves in goal for the Jacks while the Wildcats keeper Brian Linne had eight saves.
Humboldt travels to Cal State Stanislaus Sunday at 3 p.m. to close out regular-season play. The Lumberjacks now need a win over the Warriors, plus a little help from elsewhere in order to work their way back into the top four teams in the conference and earn a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament. With a win on Sunday, the Jacks also need a loss by Chico State or Cal State Dominguez Hills, the two teams just above HSU in total points.
