ARCATA — (Oct. 21) On it's way to being swept by No. 13 nationally ranked Chico State, Humboldt State rallied for three straight wins, knocking off the Wildcats 13-30, 28-30, 30-21, 30-23, 15-10 in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action Saturday in Arcata.
The Lumberjacks improve to 8-12 overall and 5-12 in conference play while the Wildcats fall to 17-4 overall and 12-4 in CCAA matches.
“I haven't been (in Arcata) for too many years, but I have a feeling that there are a lot of people up here that are always happy to beat Chico,” said HSU head coach Sue Woodstra. “What has decided our matches has been our errors and tonight in tight situations we didn't make errors, (Chico State) did.”
The Wildcats looked every bit like the stronger team in the first game, laying down 18 kills while committing just three errors for a .469 attack percentage. Chico also served very well, collecting five service aces and forcing the Jacks into a .033 attack percentage.
Humboldt kept game-two much closer, but ultimately fell 30-28.
The third game started the swing of momentum for the Jacks as they broke open a 7-7 tie, scoring four straight points on
Megahn Berndt's serve. Humboldt never let up after that moment and held on for a 30-21 win behind a .417 hitting percentage.
The fourth game was much of the same as the Jacks took a 9-8 lead on a service ace by
Ashley Jucksch and led by as many as nine points before claiming the 30-23 win.
With Chico State back on its heals, Humboldt took an early 8-1 lead in the deciding fifth game, with the stretch of points including three service aces by
Maya Domoto. The Wildcats clawed back to within two at 12-10, but a block by
Kristen Kinzer and
Mallory Briney, followed by a triumphant kill by Kinzer ended the match.
“In the last three-and-a-half games we played steady and smart,” said Woodstra. “We also served tough and just played some inspiring volleyball.”
Olivia Solomon finished the match with 12 kills while
Katie Norkunas added 10 kills and 12 digs. Domoto had a match-high 23 digs to go along with three aces.
Kinzer had five blocks while Briney and
Lynsey Adams added four each. Adams also finished with nine kills.
Lindsay Macias had a match-high 20 kills for Chico State while Jamie Houle added 16.
Next week Humboldt hits the road for the final time this year, traveling to Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
