Lumberjacks power past Dixie for fifth straight win

ARCATA - (Oct. 21) Marcus Cox rushed for 131 yards on 15 carries, scoring two touchdowns to lead Humboldt State to its fifth straight win, a 45-7 thumping of Dixie State College on Saturday.

With the win Humboldt State improved to 6-1 overall, its best record at this point of the season since the fabled 1968 Camelia Bowl season. Dixie State, in its first season as an NCAA Division II affiliate, dropped to 1-6.

Cox' output marked the first time an HSU runner surpassed the 100-yard barrier since Lionel Arnold's 110 yard rushing against Western Washington on Oct. 16, 2004. He achieved the total in three quarters Saturday, removed from the game after it was securely in hand.

"We've been looking for that kind of effort from a running back for a long time, and Marcus really came through with it tonight," HSU head coach Doug Adkins said. "He ran hard, and set the tone for the entire game."

On the game's first drive, the Jacks went to the air to travel 40 yards and 11 plays and gain the advantage. Ben Peterson's 35-yard field goal opened the scoring, giving HSU a 3-0 lead with 8 minutes, 53 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

Dixie State moved the ball well on its ensuing possession, but stalled on fourth down to give the ball over at the HSU 30. This time, the Jacks mixed the run and pass effectively, working the clock during a 12-play, 83-yard drive that ended with a 4-yard touchdown run by Cox. Key to the march was an 8-yard pass completion from Blake Moorman to Joey Stein on fourth down.

Before halftime, the Lumberjacks added a touchdown on a 9-yard pass from Moorman to Edwin Henry, and a defensive score when defensive tackle Derrek Ross picked off Lance Patonai's pass and returned it eight yards for a touchdown.

The third quarter was more of the same Lumberjack dominance, with 21 more points put up on the board. Cox added a 3-yard scoring run, Moorman hit Stein with a 48-yard touchdown pass, and Kyle Killingsworth finished it off with an 85-yard punt return.

Moorman finished 13-of-16 passing for 169 yards, with Stein hauling in four receptions for 78 yards. Milton White also had four catches for the Lumberjacks, who posted 323 yards of total offense to Dixie's 262.

Amos Allen was the Rebels' most prolific weapon, rushing for 93 yards on 13 carries. Allen scored his team's only touchdown when he sprinted across from three yards out, capping a 6-play, 61-yard drive in the third quarter.

Humboldt State goes on its longest roadtrip of the season this week, traveling to Tyler, Tex. to face Texas College on Saturday.
