TURLOCK — (Oct. 22) Katie Coppoletta scored a pair of goals two minutes apart, leading Humboldt State's women's soccer team to a 2-0 win over Cal State Stanislaus Sunday in Turlock, and a berth in the California Collegiate Athletic Association Championship Tournament next week in La Jolla.

The Lumberjacks, who have now won six straight, close out regular-season play with a 12-4-4 overall record and a 9-3-4 CCAA finish. The Warriors end their season with a 7-11-2 overall record and a 4-10-2 conference mark.

Humboldt went on the attack from the opening minute, generating 14 shots in the first half, but were unable to find the back of the net.

In the second half the scoring came alive in the form of Coppoletta. The senior forward's first goal came at the 62:17 mark on an assist by Katie Forba. Forba received a long ball and crossed to the front of the goalmouth where Coppoletta headed it in.

One minute and fifty seconds later, Coppoletta tallied an unassisted goal to give the Jacks a 2-0 lead.

“Offensively, that was the best I've seen us play all season,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We had a lot of opportunities in the first half and just couldn't get one, but in the second half we erupted.”

In goal, Staci Self made three saves on Cal State Stanislaus' nine shots, earning her seventh save of the season.

Humboldt, the fourth seed, will open tournament play Friday at 7 p.m. against host and No. 1 seeded UC San Diego. A match-up between No. 2 Chico State and No. 3 Sonoma State precedes the Jacks' match, kicking off at 4:30 p.m.

“The team is really excited to be going down to (La Jolla) and opening the conference tournament against UC San Diego,” said Cumbo. “We had a solid 90-minute game today and we are playing our best soccer right now.”
