CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Mens soccer falls 2-1 in season finale

TURLOCK — (Oct. 22) A near historic season came to an end Sunday, as Humboldt State's men's soccer team fell 2-1 in double overtime to Cal State Stanislaus in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Lumberjacks finish the 2006 season with an 11-6-3 overall mark and a 7-6-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association record. The Warriors, who earn spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament, improve to 10-8-2 overall and 9-5-2 in conference play.

“We got off to a real good start and scored in the first three minutes,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “It was a pretty physical match and through the duration of the game we did a good job and had some decent chances, we just didn't get it done.”

Humboldt took an early 1-0 lead when Eric Webster found the back of the net at the 2:38 mark of the game. Following a foul at the midline, Zlatan Sahmanovic sent the free kick into the box where Tony Ramirez flicked it to Webster who volleyed it across the goal line.

Kyle Lindquist scored the equalizer for Cal State Stanislaus five minutes into the second half off a corner kick by Matthew Johnson.

The score remained tied at the end of regulation and through the first 10-minute sudden victory overtime period. With just under three minutes remaining in the second overtime, Humboldt's Drew Ryan saved a shot by Kishin Hamaguchi, but Matt Ryan connected on the blocked hot and sent it into the net.

Ryan finished with 14 saves for the Lumberjacks while the Warriors keeper Manda Herrera had five saves.

Despite the disappointing end to the season, the 2006 squad recorded the first winning season for the program since 2000 while their total of 11 victories is a feat reached for just the 10th time in the 36-year history of the program.

“Like all year, the three seniors (Keith Lambert, Lance Pimentel and Dane Valadao) were a huge part of today's game,” said Cumbo. “Despite the loss, I'm really proud of the whole team and I'm happy with what we accomplished this year.”
