SAN BERNARDINO — (Oct. 27) Recovering from its first defeat of the season suffered a week ago, No. 3 nationally ranked Cal State San Bernardino vented on visiting Humboldt State on Friday, claiming a 30-17, 30-23, 30-27 win over the Lumberjacks in California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball action.
The win improved CSUSB to 22-1 overall and 16-1 in the CCAA while Humboldt State fell to 8-13 and 5-12. The Lumberjacks, coming off a pair of home wins last weekend, remained winless on the road.
"(Cal State San Bernardino) is a very understated team," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "They don't play off emotion. Instead, they go about their business, and play efficiently."
Despite losing in three, the Jacks hung tough in the second and third game following a slow start in the opener. Humboldt led 13-11 following four straight attack errors on the Coyotes, but CSUSB scored five straight to regain control on the way to the victory.
In the third game, the Jacks fell behind by as many as seven points early, but rallied to pull within one on
Katie Norkunas' kill and another Coyote error, trailing 25-24. Again, Cal State San Bernardino composed itself down the final stretch, finishing the evening on Sara Rice's kill.
"I think we made some really good plays, but they finished off most of them," Woodstra said. "We dug and hung in there, stayed in good position and made some good decisions."
Norkunas led the Lumberjacks statistically with nine kills.
Maya Domoto contributed 13 digs and Norkunas added 11 for Humboldt State, while Jessica Granados had 10 kills and Mehan Haas 18 digs to pace the Coyotes.
Humboldt State plays its final road match Saturday, facing Cal Poly Pomona. The Lumberjacks finish off the season next weekend with two matches at home.
"We're going into our match tomorrow with confidence," Woodstra said. "We have the right attitude, and we're thinking we're going to beat them."T
