POMONA — (Oct. 28) Starting slowly in each game, Humboldt State was unable to gain enough momentum to overcome host Cal Poly Pomona, falling 30-20, 30-27, 34-32 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball match played Saturday.
The loss dropped Humboldt State to 8-14 overall, ending the road portion of their first CCAA campaign without a league victory away from the Jacks' own East Gym. HSU will return home to finish out the season with matches Friday and Saturday.
"We didn't start playing until midway through each game," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "Every time, we'd start battling when it was already too late."
In the opening game, the Jacks trailed 15-7 before mounting a charge, starting a trend that followed them throughout the match.
Katie Norkunas started a surge with a kills, and the Jacks continued to battle from that point, pulling within 23-20.
A pair of kills by CPP's Vanessa Williams put the Broncos in position for victory, and a service error by the Jacks finished off the game.
Humboldt State trailed by as many as 10 points in the second game, but came all the way back to tie the score at 27-27 on an attack error by the Broncos. Cal Poly Pomona's Jenna Young ended HSU's comeback hopes with three straight kills.
In the third game, the Jacks wasted less time, rallying from another early deficit to take a two-point lead that they held halfway through the game. Neither team could pull away, trading leads throughout the remainder.
HSU actually held game point at 31-30 when
Megahn Berndt served an ace, but after two more ties, Williams' kill ended the match.
Norkunas led the Lumberjacks with 11 kills and 12 digs, with
Kristen Kinzer adding 10 kills and
Maya Domoto 10 digs.
For Cal Poly Pomona, Williams had 14 kills and Casey Riedel had 11, improving the Broncos to 9-14 overall and 6-12 in the CCAA. The victory was the 600th in the career of Bronco head coach Rosie Wegrich.
