ROHNERT PARK — (Oct. 4) With seventeen seconds remaining in a second sudden victory overtime period, Sonoma State's Andrew Bailey headed in a long ball from Brett Cook to claim a 1-0 win over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's soccer action Wednesday.
The Lumberjacks fall to 8-4-2 overall and 4-4-2 in the CCAA. The Seawolves improve to 10-4-0 overall and 9-1-0 in conference play.
In the first half, Humboldt's defensive line of
Mark Nelson,
Dane Valadao,
Geoff Houck, Zlatan Samanovic and
Keith Lambert were huge in holding the Seawolves at bay. The four backs repeatedly cut down crossed balls, won the ball in the air and cleared lose balls in the box.
HSU keeper
Drew Ryan was also instrumental in the 0-0 first half score, coming up with two saves.
The second half was more of the same, as the Seawolves got off 12 shots to the Jacks' two.
With 15 minutes remaining in regulation, Humboldt's
Mark Nelson was whistled for his second yellow card, forcing the Jacks to play a man down for the rest of the game.
The card seemed to give the Jacks a bit of a spark as their best opportunity of the game came in the final two minutes of regulation.
Andres Ripa broke away on a long ball and took on Sonoma's keeper Brook Johnson one-on-one. Johnson made a spectacular save, forcing overtime.
Humboldt returns to Arcata to host San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay on Friday and Sunday, respectively.
