Lumberjacks' rally falls short in five-game loss to Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK — (Oct. 4) Rallying from a two-game deficit, Humboldt State didn't quite have enough to pull out the victory in a 30-26, 30-18, 26-30, 26-30, 16-14 loss to Sonoma State in a California Collegiate Athletic Association volleyball match played Wednesday.

Humboldt State, which defeated Sonoma State in a match played in Arcata earlier this season, dropped to 6-9 overall and 3-8 in league matches and remained winless on the road. The Seawolves improved their record to 7-8 overall and 4-7 in the CCAA.

"On the road, we've had trouble finding that emotion that we need to be successful," HSU head coach Sue Woodstra said. "We were able to generate some emotion tonight in the last three games, so that's a positive, but we just didn't play clean enough."

HSU fell behind quickly in the opening game before pulling within two points at 28-26 before the Seawolves put the contest away. In the second game, the Seawolves  quickly grabbed a 8-2 lead behind the serving of Sarah Illingworth, and the Lumberjacks were unable to recover from the deep hole.

Games three and four were both tightly contested, with the Jacks finishing off both games strong to even the match at 2-2. Liz Shannon served an ace for the final point in the third game, and Megahn Berndt served three straight points to help HSU recover from a late disadvantage in taking the fourth.

Humboldt State led by as many as three points in the fifth and deciding game, and the teams found themselves tied at 14-14 before a pair of ball handling errors by HSU sealed the win for SSU.

"At the end, just making a key play here or there would have made the difference," Woodstra said. "There weren't many points with clean endings. It was more of a scrappy type of game that they were able to win."

Katie Norkunas led the Lumberjacks with 14 kills, also posting a strong defensive match with 18 digs. Lynsey Adams had 12 kills and Maya Domoto led the Jacks with 28 digs.

Next up for the Lumberjacks is a CCAA home match against Cal State Monterey Bay scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday in the East Gym.
