ARCATA — (Oct. 6) Freshman forward
Roland Demombynes scored 54 seconds into the second half off of his own rebounded shot to give Humboldt State men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over San Francisco State Friday on the HSU Soccer Field.
The Lumberjacks improve to 9-4-2 overall and 5-4-2 in California Colleigate Athletic Association play while the Gators fall to 4-7-3 overall and 2-6-3 in conference matches.
“We didn't have a real strong game,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “San Francisco came up and played hard for 90 minutes. We were fortunate to get the goal we got.”
The first half featured little action from either team as the Gators managed two shots while Humboldt had three, one on goal.
At the 45:54 mark of the game, Demombynes collected a ball in front of San Francisco's goal and took a shot that was blocked by goalkeeper Ezra Mendoza.
Mendoza was unable to corral the ball and Demombynes followed his first attempt with a six yard shot into the empty net.
While unable to get an insurance goal, the Lumberjacks maintained possession of the ball for the majority of the second half. Humboldt finished the game with nine shots to the Gators six.
Humboldt returns to the field Sunday at 3 p.m. for a CCAA match against CSU Monterey Bay.
