ARCATA — (Oct. 6) Avenging a 1-0 loss to San Francisco State from earlier in the season, and breaking a four-match tie game streak, Humboldt State claimed a 2-0 win over the Gators Friday in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action.

The Lumberjacks improve to 7-4-4 overall and 4-3-4 in conference play while the Gators fall to 4-8-2 overall and 3-6-2 in CCAA action.

“We were happy to get a win in 90 minutes,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We played decent in the first half and moved the ball around well.”

Humboldt came out a bit flat in the first few minutes of play, fending off the Gators' attack. The momentum swung 11 minutes into the game when Ali Lawrence's cross nicked off of SFSU's keeper Kat Green and went into the net.

The 1-0 advantage gave the Jacks a spark and they spent most of the remainder of the half in the Gators' end.

At the 33:50 mark, Jessica Hewins added to the lead when she curled a corner kick into the back end of the goal, putting the Jacks up 2-0.

“In the second half we played more defensive,” said Cumbo. “(San Francisco) went forward a lot, but we're happy that we maintained the shutout. This gave us some momentum for Sunday.”

Staci Self and Kelly Sandberg split time in goal for the Jacks, combining for three saves on the Gators' eight shots.

Humboldt returns to the field Sunday at 12:30 p.m. for a CCAA match against CSU Monterey Bay.
