ARCATA — (Oct. 8) Three first half goals carried Humboldt State's men's soccer team to a 3-1 California Collegiate Athletic Association win against CSU Monterey Bay on Sunday.
This win takes the Lumberjacks' overall record to 10-4-2, improving their CCAA record to 6-4-2.
“Monterey Bay came out hard at the start of the game,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo.
The game remained scoreless until the 19th minute, when junior midfielder
Eric Webster knocked in a low shot off of a quick pass from senior
Keith Lambert to give the Jacks a 1-0 advantage.
Humboldt kept the momentum rolling when
Matt Colwell beat the Otters' keeper to bring their lead to 2-0.
Sophomore
Zlatan Sahmanovic widened the Jacks' gap in the 37th minute, finishing a corner kick sent in by Colwell.
Kyle Satow scored the Otters' only goal of the game with a volley off of a free kick by Guide Graziosi just before the half completed.
The two teams maintained a high intensity throughout the second half, but were unable to find the back of the net, keeping the final score at 3-1.
“We came to win today,” said Coach Cumbo. “Our main objective was to get the three points (for a conference win) and we were successful in reaching that goal.”
The Lumberjacks play their final homestand next week, hosting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday followed by Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday.
