ARCATA — (Oct. 8) Freshman forward
Naz Zangana broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 74th minute of play, giving Humboldt State's women's soccer team a 1-0 win over CSU Monterey Bay Sunday in Arcata.
The Lumberjacks improve to 8-4-4 overall and 5-3-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with the conference win. The Otters fall to 2-12-2 overall and 2-8-2 in the CCAA.
“We played better today,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We got back to the style that we want to play. We generated more opportunities and shot a lot more from the outside.”
Humboldt put up nine shots in the first half and 14 in the second, including many shots from outside the box, continuously pressuring Monterey Bay's defense.
The Jacks finally broke through at the 73:35 mark of the game when
Lindsey Harpham sent a ball into the box where
Tisha Cotta gathered it and pushed it along to Zangana who flicked it into the net.
Staci Self had one save in goal for Humboldt while the Otters' keeper Erika Urfelder collected six saves in the game.
“Monterey Bay came out with a lot of energy,” said Cumbo. “It was not an easy win and we're glad we got the one goal.”
The Lumberjacks play their final homestand next week, hosting Cal Poly Pomona on Friday followed by Cal State San Bernardino on Sunday.
