ARCATA — (Nov. 17) Six players scored in double figures to propel Humboldt State to a 106-52 victory over Dominican University in the Lumberjacks' men's basketball season-opener Friday.
Kevin Johnson scored 23 points and contributed 13 rebounds, and the Lumberjacks were never challenged on the way to the easy win. Michael Johnson's 15 points led Dominican, which fell to 2-3 on the season.
Johnson's three-pointer four minutes into the game gave the Penguins their only lead of the night at 7-6. From that point, Humboldt State went on a 12-2 run that started with
Will Sheufelt's jumper and ended with a short baseline jumper by Johnson.
Sheufelt scored all 15 of his points in the first half, sending the Jacks into the break with a 56-29 advantage. He also finished the evening with five assists to top HSU in that category.
"Will did a good job getting us going," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "He handled the ball well and helped us find our intensity."
Devin Peal scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while both
Cy Vandermeer and
Tyler Burns added 12 points inside against the under-sized Penguins. Vandermeer also had nine rebounds to help the Jacks to a 54-26 edge on the boards, and
Jeremiah Ward scored 11 points to round out the Jacks' offensive attack.
Wood was also encouraged with the Jacks' defensive effort, which held Dominican to 41 percent shooting and forced 24 turnovers.
"I was proud of the way we played defense in the second half, because it would have been easy to relax after building a nice lead," Wood said. "We maintained the intensity level against a team that moves the ball well, cuts and screens, and that was good for our development."
HSU takes its first roadtrip of the season next week, traveling to participate in the Mac Martin Classic hosted by Chico State. The Lumberjacks face Central Washington on Friday in the event's opening game, then are back on the court Saturday for a 5 p.m. matchup against Western Oregon.
