ARCATA — (Nov. 24) A trio of Lumberjacks scored 13 points apiece as Humboldt State's women's basketball team survived a late surge up Western Oregon, but held on for a 62-52 non-conference win Friday in the East Gym.
The Lumberjacks, playing in their first regular-season game and first contest in nearly two weeks, improve to 1-0 on the season while the Wolves fall to 1-3 overall.
Humboldt opened the game with an 11-0 run that included five points by
Jennifer Enos and four by
Mia Spasowska.
The Wolves got their first bucket at the 17:39 mark on a lay-up by Leada Berkey who finished with a game-high 23 points.
After taking a 34-27 lead into the break, Humboldt increased it's lead to 11 points early on, but a feisty Western Oregon squad would not go away. While the Jacks' defense created 26 turnovers by the Wolves, Humboldt committed 25 of its own, many of which were unforced.
“We talked about taking care of the ball, playing under control and playing smart,” said HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason. “In the last few minutes of the game when we were ahead we did just about everything you can't do at the end of a close game.”
Western Oregon cut its deficit to just two points on an offensive rebound and a lay-up by Berkey at the 5:42 mark, but the Wolves were unable to score a basket in the final four minutes of the game, as Humboldt secured the 10-point win.
Spasowska, Enos and
Katie Wilder finished with 13 points each for the Jacks while Wilder also came up with five steals.
Biava Arganda and
Jessica Haayer both had seven rebounds to lead HSU, which edged the Wolves on the boards 37-33.
“Enos had a good game and hit some big shots when we needed them,” said Gleason. “Also Jessica (Haayer) did a good job against Berkey.”
The two teams will meet for a second straight game on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the East Gym.
