ARCATA — (Nov. 25) Round-two against visiting Western Oregon proved much more decisive for the Lumberjack women's basketball team, earning a 75-46 win over the Wolves Saturday in Arcata.
The non-conference win was the second straight over WOU for Humboldt State, as the Jacks improved to 2-0 on the young season. Western Oregon, which lost for the fourth straight outing, falls to 1-4 overall.
“I'm proud of the way the team made the adjustments from last night to tonight's game,” said HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason. “At shootaround today we watched film and talked about the options we didn't see last night and we focused on those. We did a nice job of finding the open spots and the open player.”
The Lumberjacks also did a nice job of hitting the open shot as they started the game making good on their first seven shots to take an early 15-2 advantage. Humboldt shot 54.5 percent from the field in the first 20-minute half, led by
Biava Arganda who scored 12 of her team-high 18 points in the opening period.
“Biava has the ability to have nights like this,” said Gleason of the 5-10 forward. “She can score inside and out.”
To complement their hot shooting, the Lumberjacks also put the clamp down on defense in the first half, allowing just seven made field goals by the Wolves to help create a 41-18 lead at the break.
Humboldt held its' composure in the second half, never allowing Western Oregon to get any closer than 13 points, and stretched the difference to as many as 32 points before claiming the 29-point win.
Supporting Arganda's offensive performance were
Katie Wilder and
Claudia Nelson who had 13 and 11 points, respectively.
Haley Andrews had a game-high 10 rebounds for the Lumberjacks who won the battle on the boards, 56-37.
Jennifer Enos dished out a team-high six assists.
Kori Seymore led the Wolves with 10 points while Leada Berkey, who had 23 points Friday night, was held to just nine points.
“We had spells where we didn't score, where we didn't have the patience we want, but overall I'm happy with the turnaround and it was good to have a positive game to go into conference play (next week),” said Gleason.
Humboldt State opens California Collegiate Athletic Association play next week, traveling to Cal State San Bernardino and Cal Poly Pomona on Dec. 1 and 2, respectively.
