SAN BERNARDINO — (Dec. 1) Humboldt State's women's basketball team shot just 25 percent from the field in the first half, including 1-11 from three-point range, leading to a 19-point halftime deficit and an eventual 65-40 loss to Cal State San Bernardino in both team's California Collegiate Athletic Association opener Friday.
The Lumberjacks fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play while the Coyotes improve to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the CCAA.
Both teams started the game slow, with the score tied at 2-2 four minutes into the game.
Taylor Kilgore hit a three-pointer at the 9:35 mark to give HSU it's first and only lead of the game at 9-8.
Vanessa Wilt's free throws restored the Coyotes' lead, but she was forced to the bench after picking up her second foul with just over 10 minutes to go in the first half.
After an HSU free throw, Rachel Johnson drains a three to send CSUSB into halftime with its largest lead of the period at 33-14.
The second half was more of the same, as three turnovers in their first four possessions forced HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason to look to her bench early on, looking for someone to step up and create some positive energy.
While the Jacks' defensive intensity and aggressiveness heightened, their shooting remained cold as they finished the game shooting 27 percent from the field. HSU also finished the game with 21 turnovers, including nine traveling calls.
“We prepared well and had a game plan that we executed,” said HSU assistant coach Rich Murphy. “Our problem was that shots we normally make weren't falling and that created some frustration. Everyone played hard, we just couldn't knock down shots.”
Katie Wilder finished with 11 points to lead HSU while Kilgore and
Biava Arganda chipped in eight points apiece.
Wilt, who spent much of the first half on the bench, came back in the second half to lead CS San Bernardino with 23 points on 10-for-13 shooting.
Humboldt State will look to turn things around Saturday when it faces Cal Poly Pomona for a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
