ARCATA — (Dec. 16)
Devin Peal scored a career-high 31 points to lead Humboldt State over Cal State Monterey Bay, 111-86 in the championship game of the Lawrence R. DeBeni, Sr. Memorial Tournament on Saturday.
In the earlier consolation game, Western Oregon rallied from a 16-point deficit to defeat Notre Dame de Namur, 80-71. Ryan Schmidt scored 24 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Wolves, now 2-5 overall, while Dan Bergeron's 16 points led five players in double figures for the Argonauts, 5-3 overall.
In the title game, Peal hit 14 of 15 shots from the field, earning all-tournament team selection. Teammate and tournament most valuable player
Kevin Johnson scored 26 points, grabbing 12 rebounds to top all players in that department.
"The inside play (of Peal and Johnson) was outstanding," HSU head coach Tom Wood said. "Either one of them could be named MVP and I wouldn't have an argument with that. I was very proud of them."
Also scoring in double figures for the Jacks, now 5-2 overall, were
Cy Vandermeer, with 11 points, and
Grayson Moyer, with 10. Vandermeer also starred on the defensive end, blocking three shots, while Moyer hit all three of his three-point attempts and dished a team-high six assists.
Monterey was led by Augie Johnston's 16 points, while teammate Richard Jenkins added 15 before fouling out with seven minutes remaining. Jenkins, who scored 57 points in Friday's semifinal win over Western Oregon, was also named to the all-tournament team, along with teammate D'Shon Cannon. Notre Dame de Namur's Chris Cook and Western Oregon's Ryan Schmidt were the final all-tourney selections.
HSU built a 11-point lead by halftime, and Peal's efforts in the post helped extend the cushion to 17 early in the second half. Johnson's tip-in with 13 minutes, 30 seconds remaining began a 13-0 Lumberjack run that included eight points by the Jacks' senior forward and five by Vandermeer that put the game well out of reach at 89-59.
Humboldt State resumes California Collegiate Athletic Association action this week, traveling to face Sonoma State in Rohnert Park on Wednesday. The Lumberjacks next home game is scheduled for Dec. 30, with travel partner Sonoma State the opponent again.
