CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Wilder and Spasowska record career-highs in 78-55 victor

POMONA — (Dec. 2) Coming off of a dismal shooting performance in a 25-point loss to CS San Bernardino Friday night, Humboldt State's women's basketball team rebounded with a dominant 78-55 win over Cal Poly Pomona Saturday, earning its first California Collegiate Athletic Association victory.

The Lumberjacks improve to 3-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play while the Broncos fall to 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the CCAA.

“The team showed a lot of character to bounce back (after Friday's loss),” said HSU head coach Joddie Gleason. “Our team captains Katie (Wilder) and Jessica (Haayer) stepped up and put the team on their backs.”

After shooting just 27 percent from the field Friday night, the Jacks were hot Saturday, hitting 55 percent from the field and 47 percent from beyond the three-point line.

Leading the way for Humboldt was senior guard Katie Wilder who tallied a career-high 28 points on nine-of-14 shooting, including three three-pointers. Wilder was also seven-of-eight from the free thrown line.

Also racking up career-high numbers was fellow senior Mia Spasowksa who scored 22 points on nine-of-12 shooting.

After starting the game down 5-2, HSU took a one-point lead on back-to-back jumpers by Biava Arganda and slowly increased its lead, taking a 36-26 advantage into the break.

“We limited our turnovers to start the game and got great looks,” said Gleason of her team's first-half performance. “We made (Cal Poly Pomona) defense us for more than one or two passes.”

Humboldt's defensive pressure rattled the Broncos throughout the game, forcing 21 turnovers by the home team.

Meanwhile, the Jacks hot shooting continued in the second half as they led by as many as 26 points before finishing the game with a 23-point advantage.

HSU takes a break from conference play next week, returning to Arcata to host Notre Dame de Namur and Northwest Nazarene in the annual North Coast Inn Classic.
