ARCATA — (Aug. 27) Four different Lumberjacks scored goals Saturday as Humboldt State's women's soccer team claimed a 4-0 shutout victory over Southern Oregon in both team's season-opener.

“This was a good result for our first match,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “Our returning players showed a lot of experience and poise while our freshmen did well in their first collegiate match.”

The Lumberjacks dominated the game from the kickoff, possessing the ball in the Raiders half of the field for much of the 90-minute contest.

At the 16:33 mark of the first half, Kim Halloran received a short cross from Lindsey Harpham and slotted the ball past SOU's keeper for a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later Libby Kimmett scored from the top of the box after collecting a throw-in from Sarah Nakamoto.

The Jacks' third goal came from Allison Lawrence at the 28:34 mark of the first half. The freshman midfielder took a crossing ball form Halloran, went one-on-one with the keeper, and slotted the ball into the net for her first collegiate goal.

After taking a 3-0 lead into the break, Humboldt added its final goal in the 61st minute when Katie Coppoletta received a long ball up the middle from Lawrence and beat the Raiders' keeper for the 4-0 lead.

The Lumberjacks tallied 20 total shots in the game, 12 on goal, while limiting Southern Oregon to just one.

“I liked how we built the attack up and played the way we have been training,” said Cumbo. “It was good to see four different people score. We had three midfielders and one forward score, so everybody is getting involved in the attack.”

Humboldt takes a one day break from action before returning to the HSU Soccer Field Tuesday for a 2 p.m. match-up against Oregon Tech.
