ARCATA — (Aug. 29) Humboldt State's women's soccer team scored a pair of first-half goals and added three more throughout the second half, rolling toa  5-0 win over Oregon Tech Tuesday on the HSU Soccer Field.

The Lumberjacks improve to 2-0 on the season while the Hustlin' Owls fall to 2-2.

“We worked on some different restarts and some different ways to defend,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo.

Humboldt spent nearly the entire 45-minute first half in the Owls' end of the field, putting constant pressure on OIT's defense. The Jacks put up 20 shots in the half, ten on goal.

After 30 minutes of play, Humboldt finally found the back of the net as Jessica Hewins collected a long ball, sent up the middle of the field by Elissa White, and slipped a shot past the Owls' keeper Jaclyn Unruh.

Three minutes later Hewins came up with an assist on a goal scored by freshman Katie Forba, giving the Jacks  a 2-0 lead at the break.

In the second half, the Jacks changed their defensive strategy, not pressuring the ball until the midfield line.

“We were trying to open up some space and then attack it,” said Cumbo of the change.

The strategy worked as Humboldt tallied three goals, one in the 64th minute, one in the 75th minute and one with 28 seconds remaining in the contest.

Lindsey Harpham, Tisha Cotta and Jamie McClain each score their first goal of the year while White, Hewins, McClain and Megan Kobler earned assists.

The Lumberjacks finished the game with 31 shots while giving up just one shot to the Owls, a long shot off of a free kick.

Humboldt travels to Ashland, Ore., Friday for a rematch with Southern Oregon. Kick off is scheduled for 4 p.m.
