HSU falls in five to CSU Monterey Bay

SEASIDE — (Sept. 1) Despite an impressive start in conference play Wednesday in Arcata, Humboldt State's volleyball team was equally unimpressive Friday in Seaside when it fell 3-2 to CSU Monterey Bay in a California Collegiate Athletic Association match.

Humboldt fell to 4-2 overall and 1-1 in CCAA play.

“It was disappointing to watch,” said HSU head coach Sue Woodstra. “We had seen good strides in getting better and tonight we laid down and really didn't perform. We looked like a young team tonight and we shouldn't.”

The Lumberjacks won the first and fourth games of the match while the Otters claimed the second, third and fifth games.

Individual game scores and statistics for the match were unavailable.

“We showed a little control in the fourth game, got ahead and rode that,” said Woodstra,” but we never really stepped up our level of play.

“We've started off slowly in matches this year, but we've been picking up our play,” Woodstra added. “We didn't do that tonight. We committed a lot of errors and were just not very sharp at all tonight.”

The Jacks return to Arcata next Friday and Saturday, hosting CCAA opponents Cal State Bakersfield and Cal State L.A. First serve for both matches is set for 7 p.m. in the East Gym.
