ASHLAND, Ore. — (Sept. 1) Lumberjack goalkeeper
Staci Self made good on a penalty kick in the 82nd minute of play, giving Humboldt State's women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over Southern Oregon Friday in Ashland, Ore.
Playing their third game in six days, the Jacks were a bit lethargic, but still managed to claim their third straight shutout of the season, improving to 3-0.
“A lot of players didn't have a strong game, but I'm proud of the team,,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “They stayed focused and confident and they found a way to win.”
The game was the second meeting this season between the Lumberjacks and Raiders, the first resulting in a 4-0 win for Humboldt State.
“We didn't have as many opportunities as the last time, but we did have chances to score,” said Cumbo.
One of the Lumberjacks' best opportunities came in the 82nd minute of the game when
Rebecca Glaspy drilled a shot from the top of the box. A Raider defender stuck her hand up to stop the shot, resulting in a hand ball call and a penalty kick for the Jacks.
Self made good on the PK, the first goal of her collegiate career, to give Humboldt the 1-0 victory.
HSU returns to Arcata Sunday for its final non-conference match, hosting Western Oregon at 1 p.m. on the HSU Soccer Field.
