ARCATA — (Sept. 13) Humboldt State struck first in the match, but Sonoma State scored three unanswered goals in the second half to claim a 3-1 win over the Lumberjack men's soccer squad in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Wednesday in Arcata.
The Lumberjacks fall to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in conference play while the Seawolves improve to 4-3 overall and 3-0 in the CCAA.
“I'm pretty happy with the way the guys played, we just didn't finish,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “Good teams will make you pay and (Sonoma) made us pay for the mistakes we made.”
The Jacks struck in the 41st minute of play when
Jon Eseman volleyed in a rebounded shot by
Geoff Houck, giving Humboldt the 1-0 lead at the break.
Seven minutes into the second half, the Seawolves were awarded a penalty kick following a hard tackle in the box. Brett Cook made good on the PK, tying the game back up.
Just six minures later, SSU struck again, this time attacking off a Lumberjack turnover in the midfield. Michael Asaro netted the goal on an assist by Nathan Medina.
Sonoma tallied a final insurance goal at the 67:03 mark when Andrew Bailey volleyed in a cross from Asaro. Mike Travis was also credited with an assist on the goal.
Humboldt had 12 shots in the game, including a number of breakaways, but only managed one shot on goal.
“(Sonoma's) goalkeeper had a couple of good saves, but there is no excuse for not finishing in front of the goal,” said Cumbo.
The Lumberjacks travel to CSU Monterey Bay Friday and to San Francisco State Sunday for a pair of CCAA matches.
