ARCATA — (Sept. 13) Sonoma State's Megan Catton made good on a penalty kick 5:10 into the first sudden victory overtime period, giving the Seawolves a 1-0 win over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Wednesday in Arcata.
The Lumberjacks fall to 4-3 overall and 1-2 in conference play while the Seawolves improve to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in the CCAA.
“Defensively, I think we played well,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “What bothered me was our attack. We are still struggling to find a second forward. We need to be more creative and dynamic offensively.”
The two teams were near dead even for the 95 minutes played. HSU had nine shots, six on goal, while Sonoma took 11 shots, five on goal.
With 4:50 second remaining in the first overtime period, Lumberjack defender
Elissa White was called for a tackle from behind at the top of the box and the Seawolves were awarded a penalty kick.
Humboldt's goalkeeper
Kelly Sandberg dove right on the kick, but Catton sent the ball left into the back of the net.
Sandberg had three saves in the match while SSU's keeper Carissa Amiral recorded six saves.
The Lumberjacks travel to CSU Monterey Bay Friday and to San Francisco State Sunday for a pair of CCAA matches.
