Gators claim 1-0 win over Jacks

SAN FRANCISCO — (Sept. 17) San Francisco State took immediate advantage of the Lumberjacks' Elissa White being tossed from the game, scoring on a free kick following the red card for a 1-0 victory Sunday in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action.

The Lumberjacks fall to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in the CCAA while the Gators improve to 3-4-1 overall and 2-2-1 in conference play.

“We played well, but it's tough to play with a man down,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We had some chances, we even had the ball in their box in the final 20 seconds of the game, but we couldn't convert.”

The teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first 45 minute period. Humboldt had four shots in the half while San Francisco had five.

In the 60th minute of play White received a yellow card for a hard tackle and just eight minutes later she received a second card, resulting her being ejected from the game.

With the ball in the Lumberjacks' end of the field, Cory Hews played the free kick through to the top of the box where Carrie Garibott collected it and drove home a shot from 15 yards out.

HSU returns home this week, hosting CCAA opponents Cal State Stanislaus on Friday and Chico State on Sunday.
