ARCATA — (Sept. 22) Two first-half goals were enough to help Humboldt State edge out Cal State Stanislaus, 2-1 in a California Collegiate Athletic Association game played Friday at the HSU Soccer Field.
 
This win brings the Lumberjacks' overall record to 6-2-1, improving their CCAA record  to 3-2-1. CSU Stanislaus fell to 4-6-0 and 3-3-0 in league games.
 
The Jacks got off to a quick start, maintaining possession of the ball and keeping their passes under control. They kept the pressure on the Warriors' defense throughout the first half to claim the quick lead.
 
Six minutes into the first half, HSU drew a foul inside the goal-box, resulting in a penalty kick taken by Jon Eseman, who drilled the ball into the left side of the net for the first goal.  In the 37th minute, HSU defender Dane Valadao scored the Jacks' second goal of the game, widening the margin between the teams.

“I feel good about today's game.”  said Head Coach Andy Cumbo. “We got a fast start early and kept our composure.”
 
In the second half, Valadao kept the defensive line strong, shutting down nearly every run made by the Warriors.  Sophomore goalkeeper Drew Ryan was also key in the Jacks' victory, making nine outstanding saves throughout the game.
 
“Drew had a great game,” said Coach Cumbo. “Keith Lambert did a good job at the midfield winning the fifty-fifty balls.”

CSU Stanislaus finally put a mark on the scoreboard when Dominic Figureoa slipped a ball past Ryan with 29 seconds remaining in the game.

The Lumberjacks will finish off this weeks' play with a home game against Chico State University at the HSU Soccer Field on Sunday.  Kick-off will be at 3 p.m.
