CAL POLY HUMBOLDT ATHLETICS

Lumberjacks down Broncos in three

ARCATA — (Sept. 22) Bouncing back from a three-match losing streak, Humboldt State's volleyball team claimed a straight-sets win over Cal Poly Pomona Friday in California Collegiate Athletic Association action.

The Lumberjacks' 30-28, 30-2-, 32-30 win moved them to 6-5 overall and 3-4 in conference play. Cal Poly Pomona falls to 5-7 overall and 2-5 in the CCAA.

“Our effort was very consistent tonight,” said HSU head coach Sue Woodstra. “We played aggressively and we didn't let up. We play best when we play in that mode.”

In the first game, the Lumberjacks took an early lead, stretching to 21-16 before the Broncos went on a five point run, tying the game at 21. Pomona took a 27-26 lead on a service error by the Lumberjacks, but Humboldt closed out the game with a block by Kristen Kinzer and Mallory Briney and a kill by Kinzer for the 30-28 win.

Down 6-4 early in the second game, the Jacks scored six straight points to go up 9-6, then used the momentum to take them to a 28-17 advantage and a 30-20 victory. Humboldt hit .323 in the game while holding the Broncos to a .053 attack percentage.

Humboldt took an 18-9 lead in the third game before Pomona surged to eventually tie the game at 28. The teams would tie at 29-29 and 30-30, but the Jacks put the match away on a solo block by Briney and a kill by Courtney Lee.

“We blocked well, our defense was good, our serve was good and we passed excellently,” said Woodstra. “We had some keys to attack and defend (Pomona) on and we carried out our plan.”

Olivia Solomon led the Jacks with 13 kills while Katie Norkunas added 10 kills and 11 digs. Maya Domoto led all players with 17 digs while Danielle Wells had a match-high five blocks.

The Lumberjacks return to the court Saturday when they host CCAA opponent CSU San Bernardino. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. in the East Gym.
