ARCATA — (Sept. 24) Humboldt State's men's soccer team put together many scoring opportunities but was unable to finish the ball, resulting in a 1-0 loss against California Collegiate Athletic Association competitor Chico State Sunday.
The Lumberjacks fall to 6-3-1 overall and 3-3-1 in CCAA play while the Wildcats improve to 5-5-0 overall and 4-2 in conference action.
Within the first minute of play, the Jacks put together an excellent play when
Matt Colwell crossed the ball to
Jon Eseman who had a header that just missed the top corner of the Wildcats' goal.
The Wildcats responded and picked up their pace, winning the majority of the 50-50 balls.
“With the exception of the first play I thought we had a slow start,” said Head Coach Andy Cumbo. “We were sluggish and didn't make the best decisions on the ball.”
The Jacks' energy level picked back up in the second half, but again, the Wildcats responded, winning a scramble in front of the Humboldt goal box to put Chico on the scoreboard.
“We had all the opportunities we needed to win the game. We just weren't able to put it together to come up with a finish.”
The Wildcats' goal, scored in the 58th minute by Evan Armstrong, was enough to hold off the Jacks for the win.
Humboldt will take on Simpson College for the second time this season on Wednesday, before heading to Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC San Diego for a pair of CCAA matches.
