ARCATA — (Sept. 24) Humboldt State and Chico State each scored a first half goal, but neither team was able to break the tie in the second half and two overtime periods as the California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer game ended in a 1-1 draw Sunday.
The Lumberjacks move to 6-4-1 overall and 3-3-1 in conference play. The Wildcats are now 5-2-2 overall and 5-1-1 in the CCAA.
“I'm happy with the result,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We came out aggressive and I felt like overall we did good. After we scored we got a little tentative, but once they scored we got back into it.”
Humboldt's goal, scored at the 19:12 mark of the first half, came following a corner kick by
Jessica Hewins.
Libby Kimmett headed Hewins' cross at Chico's goal, but the shot was blocked by keeper Katie Gonzales. With the ball knocked back into play,
Tisha Cotta recovered the ball in the box and pushed it into the Wildcats' net.
Ten minutes later, Abby Stretch tied the game for the Wildcats, receiving a short cross from Anjie Goulding and slotting the ball past Lumberjack keeper
Staci Self.
Self and Gonzales finished the game with four saves for their respective teams. Chico had 15 shots in the game while Humboldt had 11.
“I was impressed with out fitness, especially in overtime,” said Cumbo. “This was a good result.”
Humboldt heads to Southern California next week, taking on Cal State Dominguez Hills and UC San Diego for a pair of CCAA matches.
