ARCATA — (Sept. 27) Freshmen
Roland Demombynes,
Tony Ramirez and
Adam Tschannen tallied one goal apiece, leading Humboldt State's men's soccer team to a 3-0 non-conference win over Simpson University Wednesday on the HSU Soccer Field.
The Lumberjacks improve to 7-3-1 overall while the Red Hawks fall to 4-4 on the season.
“Three rookies scored today, so that's good,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “Tony (Ramirez) had a good game. He's really picked it up in the last few weeks.”
Demombynes opened up the scoring in the 13th minute of play when he headed the ball into the net off a short cross from Ramirez.
That was the only goal scored in the half as the Lumberjacks struggled with teh Red Hawks' off sides trap, earning 10 offsides calls in the game.
“The guys are having a hard time resisting the urge to play the 40 yard ball over the top,” said Cumbo.
Humboldt settled down a bit in the second half, using more short passes and overlapping runs to build its attack.
Ramirez' goal, a low shot from about 8 yards out, came in the 67th minute of play off of an assist from
Dane Valadao.
Tschannen rounded out the scoring with just 45 seconds remaining in the game.
Matt Colwell collected the ball in front of Simpson's goalmouth and dropped it back to Tschannen who slipped his shot past keeper Daniel Anderson.
The Lumberjacks had 24 shots in the game while holding their opponent to just six opportunities.
Humboldt resumes California Collegiate Athletic Association play this weekend, traveling to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and UC San Diego on Sunday.
