Wolves score early, hold on for win over Jacks

ARCATA — (Sept. 3) Fifteen shots and a pair of penalty kick opportunities couldn't get it done for the Lumberjack women's soccer squad as it fell 1-0 to Western Oregon in non-conference action Sunday on the HSU Soccer Field.

Humboldt State fell to 3-1-0 overall while the Wolves improved to 1-1-1 overall.

“We had all the opportunities we needed to win, it just wasn't our day,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo. “We created scoring opportunities and put pressure on their backs, we just couldn't find the back of the net.”

Western Oregon jumped on the board just 1:38 into the game when Kristin Werhane lofted a short cross towards the Jacks goal.

Humboldt's keeper Staci Self came out on the ball, but the Wolves' Lisa Munyon got her head on the ball, tipping just out of Self's reach and into the goal.

“Staci is a good goalkeeper, she just got caught out in no-man's-land,” said Cumbo.

Following the goal, the Jacks attacked relentlessly, maintaining possession for the majority of the game, but never getting a quality shot off. Just four of HSU's 15 shots were on goal.

Humboldt's best opportunities to score came off of a pair of penalty kicks, one in each half, due to hard tackles in the box. Self's PK hit the crossbar and Elissa White's shot was saved by the Wolves' keeper Ally Meyer.

Meyer had four saves on the day while Self recorded on WOU's three shots.

The Lumberjacks open California Collegiate Athletic Association play this week, hosting Cal State L.A. on Friday and Cal State Bakersfield on Sunday, both on the HSU Soccer Field.
