LA JOLLA — (Sept. 30) Humboldt State's volleyball team put up a strong effort against the No. 13 nationally ranked UC San Diego Tritons, but ultimately fell 30-21, 30-18, 30-23 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action Saturday.

The Lumberjacks drop to 6-8 overall and 3-7 in CCAA play while the Tritons improve to 13-2 overall and 8-2 in conference matches.

“We played with more passion and energy that we did on Friday,” said HSU head coach Sue Woodstra. “We played with (UC San Diego) in most areas, but they serve very well and that hurt us.”

Olivia Solomon led Humboldt with six kills while Katie Norkunas and Danielle Wells added five kills apiece for the Jacks who hit .065 as a team.

The Lumberjacks did block well, tallying eight team blocks, led by Kristen Kinzer, Wells and Mallory Briney who each had three blocks.

The Tritons were led offensively by Rebecca Bailey's 16 kills while Brianne Koche added 11.

Humboldt travels to Sonoma State on Wednesday before returning home Saturday to take on Cal State Monterey Bay.
