ARCATA — (Sept. 8) Cal State L.A. scored a pair of goals in a span of four minutes late in the second half, leading to a 2-1 victory over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's soccer action Friday in Arcata.

The Lumberjacks fall to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in CCAA play while the Golden Eagles improve to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

The two teams played to a 0-0 draw in the first 45-minute period, each taking four shots.

“L.A. got off to a good start but after about eight minutes we settled in and I was really pleased with how we played in the first half,” said HSU head coach Andy Cumbo.

Eight minutes into the second half, Katie Coppoletta scored her second goal of the season to give the Jacks a 1-0 lead. Jessica Hewins took a free kick just outside the top right corner of the box, slotting the ball to Elissa White who made a run to the endline.

White sent a short cross to the middle of the goalmouth where Coppoletta flicked it past Cal State L.A.'s keeper and into the net.

The Jacks seemed to have the momentum with their 1-0 lead, but in the 72nd minute of play Amber De Seriere flicked in a corner kick by Erica Prado, and four minutes later Amanda Matthews sent a lofting shot from near the left side of the endline to give the Golden Eagles the 2-1 advantage.

“We can't expect to win and give up soft goals. It's unacceptable,” said Cumbo. “None of the three of the goals we've given up this year have been shots, they've all been crosses.”

HSU finished with 12 shots, six on goal, but were unable to convert on numerous opportunities.

Humboldt returns to the field Sunday, taking on CCAA opponent Cal State Bakersfield. Kickoff is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. on the HSU Soccer Field.
