Sheufelt and Johnson post double-doubles in win over SFSU

ARCATA — (Jan. 11) Will Sheufelt recorded a career-high 11 assists while contributing 16 points, and teammate Kevin Johnson added 18 points and 13 rebounds in Humboldt State's 101-82 win over San Francisco State on Thursday.

Humboldt State also received a game-high 21 points from Grayson Moyer, helping the Jacks improve to 10-2 overall and 5-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Alex Thomas and Dean Wilson each scored 16 points for the San Francisco State Gators, who dropped to 5-6 overall and 1-5 in the CCAA.

The Lumberjacks wasted little time in building a 12-point lead, moving up 16-4 on Devin Peal's layup with 15 minutes, 46 seconds remaining in the first half. But the Gators responded with a 14-4 run, finished with Wilson's three-pointer that trimmed the Jacks' lead to 20-18.

With 4:05 remaining in the half, the Gators managed their only tie of the contest, drawing to 32-32 on a Thomas three-pointer. Cy Vandermeer drained a three-pointer and two free throws before Jeremiah Ward finished the half with another pair of free throws to give HSU a 46-41 lead at halftime.

Humboldt State maintained a 10 to 13 point lead through much of the second half before San Francisco State produced another surge. Will Logan's layup cut the lead to 79-73, but Sheufelt hit two more free throws to initiate a 14-2 HSU run that Moyer finished off with a three-pointer.

Also in double figures for Humboldt State were Ward, with 10 points, and Peal, with 13. Derek Fletcher added 14 points and Logan scored 10 for the Gators.

Humboldt State returns to the East Gym court Saturday for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff against CCAA opponent Cal State Monterey Bay.
