LOS ANGELES — (Jan. 19) Sophomore guard
Jennifer Enos sparked the Lumberjacks with 14 points, including four treys, and
Mia Spasowska was two shy of her career-high with 27 points as Humboldt State women's basketball team pulled away from a frisky Cal State L.A. squad to earn a 71-57 win in Los Angeles Friday.
The Lumberjacks improve to 11-3 overall and 6-3 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles fall to 3-10 overall and 1-7 in league play.
Both teams started the game sluggish and shooting poorly from the field as the Jacks finally took a 4-2 lead at the 16:41 mark. Humboldt then slowly built a 14-9 lead despite giving up numerous offensive rebounds early on.
Cal State L.A. tied the game at 14 on a pair of free throws at the 8:40 mark., but Enos sparked the Lumberjacks late in the first half, taking a charge and nailing a pair of three pointers.
A layup at the buzzer by
Mia Spasowska gave HSU a 29-25 advantage heading into the locker room.
“We didn't have a lot of intensity in the first half,” said HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason. “(CSLA) went to a zone and we stood around and weren't aggressive. After the half we did a great job making adjustments and getting the ball inside to Mia.”
Cal State L.A. scored first five points of the second half, quickly taking a 30-29 lead. The two teams then traded baskets for the ensuing few minutes before HSU ran off 11 straight points to take a 42-32 lead with 13:20 remaining.
The Golden Eagles cut the margin back down to five points, but Enos made good on a three pointer, then came up with a steal and a layup to stretch the Jacks' lead up to 55-45 with just over seven minutes remaining.
“Jennifer has been getting better and better every game,” said Gleason. “We know she can shoot, but she has stepped it up on the defensive end and has been making big plays.”
Humboldt stretched its lead to as many as 15 points late in the game, shooting 58.6 percent in the second half and 46 percent for the game.
Katie Wilder had a solid game for HSU, tallying nine points, eight rebounds and seven assists while
Biava Arganda chipped in nine points and four rebounds.
Amber Tood came off the bench to lead the Golden Eagles with 15 points.
Humboldt faces Cal State Bakersfield Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for another CCAA match-up.
