LOS ANGELES — (Jan. 19) Cal State Los Angeles broke open a tight game with 18 straight points on the way to a 94-85 win over Humboldt State in California Collegiate Athletic Association men's basketball action Friday.
The loss ended HSU's winning streak at eight straight, dropping the Jacks to 11-3 overall and 6-3 in the CCAA. The Golden Eagles improved to 6-7 overall and 3-6 in league games.
Jontae Vinson scored 46 points, contributing heavily to the decisive outburst. Humboldt State mounted a comeback attempt in the closing minutes, drawing within eight points, but the Golden Eagles made enough free throws down the stretch to preserve the victory.
Kevin Johnson led Humboldt State with 18 points while also grabbing a game-high 14 rebounds.
Grayson Moyer scored 16 points and
Jeremiah Ward added 14 for the Lumberjacks, who have dropped three of their four CCAA road games this year.
Cal State Los Angeles held a 48-47 lead with just over 15 minutes remaining in the game when the decisive surge began with Vinson's baseline jumper. Vincent Camper, who finished the game with 17 points, drove for a layin and after a Lumberjack turnover, Ralph Turner drained an NBA-range three-pointer to keep the momentum going.
Turner drove for a layin and converted a free throw after being fouled by HSU's
Tyler Burns to put his team up 66-47, before Burns finally broke the Eagles' scoring string with a layin of his own.
After a slow start to the game, the Jacks picked up the pace, and the Golden Eagles tried to match, but Humboldt took first advantage. HSU raced ahead behind two three-pointers from Johnson, building a five-point lead.
Cal State L.A made sure the advantage was short-lived, creating opportunities while the Jacks were missing theirs. Vinson was particularly effective, driving for layups and converting foul shot opportunities on the way to 15 first-half points.
Vinson's putback off a miss helped the Golden Eagles match their largest lead at three points before Humboldt State's
Cy Vandermeer touched the ball off the glass for the final points of the half, sending the Jacks to the break trailing 36-35.
Humboldt State attempted a comeback, but could close within only eight points before the Golden Eagles once again pulled away.
