ARCATA — (Jan. 27) Sealing their success with a 9-0 run down the stretch, Humboldt State earned a 90-82 win over No. 6 nationally ranked Chico State behind
Katie Wilder's 27 points and a career-high 25 from
Jennifer Enos in California Collegiate Athletic Association women's basketball action Saturday.
Combining to make 14 of 17 shots from the field, including three three-pointers each, HSU guards Wilder and Enos led an inspired effort that ended the Wildcats' winning streak at 11 straight. Following a 3-3 tie in the opening minutes, the Jacks never trailed against the West Region's No. 1 ranked squad.
Humboldt State, ranked No. 6 in this week's regional poll, win improved to 13-4 overall and 8-4 in the CCAA, providing head coach
Joddie Gleason with her first-ever coaching win over her alma mater. Chico State dropped to 14-2 and 10-2.
"This one feels great. These girls played their hearts out," HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason said. "Our leader on the court,
Katie Wilder, kept them focused, and Enos is getting a lot more confident. She knows how to come up big in big games."
Also scoring in double figures for the Jacks were
Biava Arganda, with 12 points, and
Mia Spasowska, with 10. Amber Simmons and Niki Simons both scored 25 points for Chico State, and Audriana Spencer contributed 12.
Starting the game with obvious intensity, the Lumberjacks hit their first four shots from the field, adding a pair of free throws to take a 11-7 lead. Chico State, meanwhile, made only one of its first 10 chances, but Simmons and Simons hit consecutive layups to keep the margin from growing excessive.
Holding a 16-4 advantage in shot opportunities at one point, the Wildcats kept the game close, pulling within one on two free throws by Simons. But Enos started another Jacks' surge with a three-pointer from the top of the key, and nailed a jumper to stretch the lead to 18-12.
Simmons worked her way to the foul line in the latter part of the opening half, helping the Wildcats work the margin down to four points. HSU answered, and four minutes later
Taylor Kilgore drained another three-pointer to give the Jacks' their largest lead at 11 points.
The Wildcats gained some momentum heading toward halftime, using a 11-3 run to trim the Jacks' advantage to only two points, but Wilder dropped in a long jumper at the buzzer to send HSU into the lockerroom with a 41-37 lead.
Remaining focused in the opening minutes of the second half, the Jacks built the lead to nine on
Biava Arganda's layin with 14:32 on the clock. The run stagnated for a brief time, but Enos hit a three and a jumper to provide HSU with a 64-52 lead.
Chico responded with its own run behind the efforts of Jade Smith-Williams, who hit a jumper and assisted on Spencer's three-pointer to cut the lead to five points. Simmons made two free throws and HSU's
Jessica Haayer and Spencer exchanged threes before the Jacks began their final flurry.
Humboldt State is back at home next week, taking on Cal Poly Pomona on Thursday and Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday.
