ARCATA — (Jan. 6) Rebounding from a near seven-minute scoring drought to finish the first half, Humboldt State's women's basketball came up with a number of clutch shots, as well as a 16-for-17 performance from the free throw line in the second half to claim a 81-70 win over visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills Saturday.
The Lumberjacks moved to 8-3 on the season and even their California Collegiate Athletic Association mark to 3-3. The Toros fell to 6-3 overall and 3-2 in league play.
Humboldt started the game hot, led by
Katie Wilder's four first-half three pointers. With a 34-20 lead at the 6:47 mark of the half, the Jacks' went cold while the Toros picked up their play.
CS Dominguez Hills would go on a 17-0 run, taking a 37-34 lead over HSU in to the break.
“We challenged the team at half time and they responded,” said HSU head coach
Joddie Gleason. “Dominguez wanted it more and was more physical (in the first half) and we needed to step up.”
The Jacks broke their scoring slump just 28 seconds into the second half on a layup by
Biava Arganda and proceeded to slowly chip away at the Toros' lead.
Jennifer Enos tied the game at 51-51 with a three pointer at the 9:38 mark and moments later the Jacks took a 54-52 lead on a three pointer by
Mia Spasowska.
HSU would never give the lead back up after that point as they stretched the margin to as many as 13 points with 2:37 remaining.
“This was a tough, skilled and aggressive Dominguez Hills team,” said Gleason. “We wanted to come out and battle and we did that.”
Wilder led the Jacks with 18 points, including a perfect 6-for-6 performance from the free throw line. Spasowska added 16 points while Arganda and Enos also reached double figures, scoring 14 and 13 points, respectively.
Jessica Liang had 17 points for CS Dominguez Hills while Aujanee Baldwin chipped in 12.
The Lumberjacks conclude their five-game homestand next Thursday and Saturday when they host San Francisco State and CSU Monterey Bay in a pair of CCAA contests.
