ARCATA — (Jan. 6)
Grayson Moyer hit a running layup as time expired, finishing off a huge second half rally and lifting Humboldt State to a 65-64 win over Cal State Dominguez Hills on Saturday.
The Lumberjacks remained unbeaten at home, winning for the sixth time in six tries and improving to 9-2 overall, 4-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. CSU Dominguez Hills dropped to 5-5 and 2-3 in CCAA games.
Recovering from a 12-point halftime deficit, Humboldt State wore down the Toros with tough defense after the break, fueled by the efforts of Moyer and
Carlos Corral. HSU pulled ahead on a pair of free throws from
Cy Vandermeer with six minutes, 29 seconds remaining, setting up a see-saw battle down the stretch.
Mike Steed drove for consecutive layups to give the Toros a 64-61 lead with only 1:57 remaining, but Humboldt's
Devin Peal answered with a layup off an assist from Moyer.
Two unsuccessful possessions later and still trailing by one, the Lumberjacks were forced to foul with 7.5 seconds on the clock. CSUDH's Jamaal Barnes missed the free throw, which was rebounded by HSU's
Kevin Johnson to set up Moyer's heroics.
The Lumberjacks pushed it down the floor, and Moyer took posession near the top of the key before driving around the defense to the right. He hung in the air for a jumper just inside the free throw line, and watched it go in as 1,237 fans erupted.
Moyer, a junior guard, finished the night with a balanced effort that included 11 pints, five assists and four steals.
Kevin Johnson added a double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds,
Will Sheufelt scored 12 points, Peal had 11 points and Vandermeer 10.
CSU Dominguez HIlls built its big lead in the first half behind the slashing drives of Jamaal Barnes and Jonathan Toliver's three-point marksmanship. Barnes had 12 points by the break on his way to a team-high 18 for the game, and Barnes scored all nine of his points in the first half on 3-3 shooting from beyond the arc.
Meanwhile, the Lumberjacks struggled with their shooting touch, hitting only 31 percent in the opening period and having to rally late to make that mark. HSU also turned the ball over repeatedly, giving it up 14 times to the Toros' defense.
Humboldt State's turnaround began midway through the second half when Corral entered the game. The junior guard ignited the Jacks' fullcourt press, showcasing his athleticism with a steal and dish to Moyer for a layin that pulled HSU within one at 55-54 with 7:10 on the clock.
Humboldt State continues its homestand next week with a pair of games in the East Gym, starting with Thursday's 7:30 p.m matchup against San Francisco State. The Jacks are back on the court two days following that contest, hosting Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday.
